Abstract

The older generation, which has reached retirement age to complete economic activity, is a significant social and economic group in terms of its role in society. Reducing the standard of living upon retirement is one of the challenges for national pension systems. The article examines the features of the social and labor situation (employment situation and standard of living) of persons of retirement age and their households in Russia in comparison with their situation in European countries where there are basic pensions in the structure of pension payments. The empirical basis of the study for assessing the situation at the household level of people of retirement age was made up of microdata from the Russian Social Survey and the European Social Survey for 2024, which were supplemented by data from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Eurostat and Rosstat to characterize the basic parameters of pension systems and the situation of people of retirement age (pensioners) at the “macro level”. The novelty of the research results lies in identifying the opportunities and risks associated with the development of the national pension system, as revealed by a comparison with the pension systems of the European countries under review.
