Abstract

When studying the social problems of the family, A.G. Kharchev paid special attention to the relations between parents and their married children, both in cohabitation and in separation. According to his own sociological research, he found that conflicts between generations are more likely when the family consists of two married couples (the older and younger) when only the mother of the husband or wife lives with the spouses. In his opinion, the cause of conflicts may be the wrong behavior on both sides. Kharchev believed that the separation of generations reduces not only the frequency of these conflicts, but also the care of grandmothers for grandchildren. From his point of view, the reduction of this aid is one of the reasons for the decline in the birth rate in Russia. In the coming years, the participation of grandmothers in child care may decrease due to the increase in the retirement age. This may contribute to a further decline in the birth rate.
