Abstract
In the military conflict, the Russian-Ukrainian border area, and especially its social component, becomes an urgent problem for sociological science. Of interest is the mass consciousness of the population in the border region, primarily young people. This age group will solve the task of restoring and developing the good neighborliness of our countries. The article presents the results of a comparative study of the students consciousness in the border regions of Russia and Ukraine – Belgorod and Kharkiv – conducted in December 2021, i.e. two months before the special operation. The substantiation of the choice of regions for comparative analysis is presented, the general and special features of students’ self-identification are revealed, its influence on interethnic tolerance, the idea of their countries, assessments of social processes taking place in them, orientation and attitudes are shown. Despite the fact that the compared groups represent states that differ in economic, political and ideological conditions, a close proximity of the main characteristics of mass consciousness is revealed stated confirming the unity of their cultural and genetic code.
