The article is devoted to the problem of methodology for study transformations of generational interactions and relations of university educational communities, which has been little developed in the sociology of higher education. The relevance of the topic is due to increased attention to the quality of these interactions and relations that affect all spheres of the university community. The article provides a justification for a new theoretical and methodological framework for the study of generational interactions and relations of university educational communities and its contribution to the development of the generational approach in sociology. The content of the concept of generational interactions and relations of students, academic and administrative staff is considered. The novelty of the research is related to the interpretation of generational interactions and relations at the university in the continuum of their two poles – crisis and consensus. The essential characteristics, signs, forms of crisis and consensus of generational interactions and relations of university educational communities, significant for further empirical interpretation of these phenomena, are shown. The conclusion is made about the practical significance of the study of university educational communities from the perspective of the proposed author’s approach both for the harmonization of social relations within universities and the higher education system, and in broader spheres of public life. This article precedes the second one, which presents the results of an empirical study of generational interactions and relations between university educational communities of Russian universities.
