The role of the Ural region in the development of Russian sociology has been and remains very significant. However, the published materials do not provide an opportunity to form a holistic view on this issue. The proposed article is intended to fill, at least partially, the existing gap and aims to acquaint the reader with the formation and development of sociology in the Urals throughout the XX and early XXI centuries. Since the article deals with the Urals as a region (macroregion), it gives its author’s interpretation. The article describes three transformations of the social space of the Ural region from the standpoint of sociological science and practice. The periodization of the process of formation and development of sociology is substantiated, the achievements, problems and limitations of its functioning are shown. The methodology of studying this process is considered through the prism of a number of scientific approaches: historical-sociological, theoretical-sociological, empirical-sociological, spatialtemporal, generational.
