The article presents the stages of development of the sociological direction at the Institute of Mongolian Studies, Buddhology and Tibetology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which is a large Oriental studies center located in the zone of geopolitical interaction between Russia, China and Mongolia. Sociological research began to develop simultaneously with the revival of sociology as a science in Soviet society in the 1960s. The conditions of formation and formation of the direction in close cooperation with the sociological centers of the country caused by the need to study the issues of social development of the region are shown. Since the beginning of the post-socialist stage, the main guidelines of the Institute’s sociologists have become topical issues of transformation of the social structure of cross-border societies in the Baikal region. At the present stage, under the condition of the geopolitical “turn of Russia to the East”, the research of sociologists of the Institute concerning the complex of social processes, transformation and modernization of cross-border societies of Baikal Asia, Mongolia and China is being updated and expanded. In order to maintain continuity and further develop the sociological direction at the Institute, new personnel are required, the expansion of the network of cooperation with sociological centers, the introduction of research results into the practice of government activities.
