Abstract

Taking into account the conclusions and recommendations of the new collective monograph (Tikhonova (ed.), 2022), the genesis of the ideas of the social structure of Russian society, which embodies the creative and innovative continuation of research accumulated over the entire period of the existence of Russian/Soviet/Russian sociology, is considered. For this purpose, the first steps and the first interpretations of the social status of the main social strata, communities and groups in Russia in the 19th century, and then their development, clarification and new understanding in the 20th – early 21st centuries are analyzed. It is shown that many attempts during this time to explain changes in the social structure are connected both with socio-economic and socio-political conditions (objective circumstances), and with the enrichment of scientific knowledge, the use of new methods of cognition. Based on information on this issue in modern Russian sociology, it is shown that the approach proposed in this monograph to the analysis of social stratification based on life chances enriches our understanding of the social structure of modern Russian society. There are also comments aimed at discussing the debatable provisions of this concept.
